Ms Marina R.S. Fortes
PhD Student
University of Queensland and CSIRO Livestock Industries.
Early career scientist, Beef CRC
Topic: Finding Genes for Economically Important Traits: Brahman Cattle Puberty
Education
2004, DVM, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
2007, MSc, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Professional Experience
As a veterinarian, Marina worked for Central Bela Vista, a center for bovine semen collection, embryo transfer and in vitro fertilization from 2004-2007. During this time Marina initiated a career in science and compled a Master of Science by investigating candidate gene markers for meat quality in zebu cattle. The degree was awarded by the University of Sao Paulo in 2007.
Marina moved to Australia in 2007 and works at the Animal Genetics Laboratory of CSIRO Livestock Iniustries and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Queensland. Marina's PhD is focused on elucidating the genetics of cattle puberty. To date, her work on cattle puberty led to the development of a new methodology suitable to study the genetics of complex traits. This methodology links genome wide association to gene networks and was published in Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. in 2010.
